Given that it’s U2 week over here I trawled through YouTube to resurrect two pieces of footage that I hadn’t clapped eyes on since the eighties. The first is the band playing Two Hearts Beat as One on the Kenny Everett show back in 1983. It’s always been one of my favourites but hasn’t featured in any of their setlists since the mid-eighties. It’s a shame because it’s a great song and is far better than a heap of the stuff that they’re currently playing on tour. If memory serves me this was the first time that I became aware of the band’s existence. Funnily enough I also remember being fairly amused by the way Bono was moving his right leg during the performance.
The other piece is the World In Action documentary which featured footage of their show in Croke Park on Saturday, 27th June, 1987. A very special concert for me as it was the first gig that I ever went to. Anyone who went along will remember Lou Reed playing support, along with the Dubliners, The Pogues and Light a Big Fire. They’ll also remember the guy walking on the roof of the Cusack Stand. I wonder whatever happened to him.
