37 Signals from the Cloud

37signals are best known for their simple, clutter free web applications such as Basecamp or High Rise.  What I like them for is their bullshit-free take on how to do business in the excellent Rework (2010).

Penned by company directors, Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, Rework outlines a common sense approach to working that implores us to get rid or workaholics, send your staff home at 5 o’clock, cut out meaningless business jargon and speak clearly, ignore cvs, pass on hiring rock-stars, and not to pay too much attention to competitors.

Their advice is anathema to everything that most professional services firms preach – their awful business lexicon in particular – and it’s a good bet that if you said anything as diabolical as “leveraging core competencies” or “love your customer” within ear shot of Messrs Fried and Heinemeier Hansson you’d get the sack.
